Honoring Marty Segol

Marty Segol was born in Boston. It has been 61 years since he joined the evolution of the three synagogues, Temple Judea, Beth Israel-Judea and finally Congregation Am Tikvah. Over the years he served as Brotherhood President, Synagogue Treasurer, Synagogue President, and served on two Rabbi search committees as well as the Finance Committee. He also chaired various fundraising events in the 1980s. As an avid fan of everything Boston, he developed a fundraising effort between a small group of SF Giants fans versus 1 Blue Jay fan and 1 Red Sox fan. Whichever team had the best record donated a specified amount to the synagogue. Oh baseball season was fun in those years! Marty's lifetime career was as a CPA; not Cleaning, Pressing and Alterations, but as a Certified Public Accountant.

Cantor Sharon Bernstein Performs

Born and raised in Northern California, Cantor Bernstein was an avid musician from a young age, studying piano and voice, performing in concerts, operas, and musicals through junior and high school. Her musical studies continued at the University of Redlands, followed by serving as the High Holy Day cantor for Arizona State University, and then as part-time cantor for Temple Beth Haverim in Agoura Hills and Congregation Sha’arei Torah in Arcadia. She studied at the H.L. Miller Cantorial School at the Jewish Theological Seminary, followed by serving as an instructor in Hazzanut for the JTS Cantorial program in Jerusalem. Her MA Thesis explored the Italian System for Chanting the Torah According to the Torino Tradition.

Through the wondrous resources of the Hebrew National University, she has been able to learn melodies from a wide array of traditions – Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Italian, Hasidic – to teach, sing, and perform Yiddish songs which are little known. As a Yiddish performer, she has presented in venues such as RAI National Italian Radio, the Ancona Klezmer Music Festival (Italy), the Center for Jewish History, the Berkeley Jewish Music Festival, and Yung YiDish, Jerusalem. She has taught in the Vilna Summer Yiddish Program and KlezCalifornia, and she recorded several of Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman’s songs on her album:  Af di Gasn fun der Shtot.

Cantor Bernstein joined Congregation Sha’ar Zahav in 2007 and has been thrilled to work and grow with such a warm, vibrant, and passionate community. We are honored to host Cantor Bernstein at our Am Tikvah gala this year!

In honor of our Cantor Emerita Linda Semi

Cantor Semi served one of our legacy congregations – B’nai Emunah –from June 1991 until she retired in 2017, returning even after that to conduct services, life cycle events, and tutor b’nai mitzvah students. She holds a degree in music education from Syracuse University, a certificate of completion in Cantorial Studies from the University of Judaism (incorporated into the American Jewish University in 2007), and was inducted into the Cantors Assembly in 1997.

Cantor Semi is the first female in a family of cantors and she incorporated many of her family melodies into her pulpit services. While her formal training capitalized on her soprano voice with art song and operatic aria emphasis, Cantor Semi’s style was greatly enriched from mentoring by Cantors Josef Cycowski, z’l, and Allan Michelson, z’l.
